RAVING REVIEW: You may not know their names, but unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard their music. A powerful documentary about some of the most influential session musicians of the 70s.

If they were “true” members of other bands, they would be iconic; instead, “The Immediate Family” (consisting of Danny Kortchmar on guitar and vocals, Leland Sklar on bass, and Russ Kunkel on drums and backing vocals, Waddy Wachtel and Steve Postell on guitars and vocals) became rock royalty by backing some of the most well-known names in music. James Taylor, Keith Richards, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and countless others. That isn’t to say they weren’t successful in their own right; it just feels like they deserve more credit than they ultimately get.

There have been some rotating members over the years; they haven’t always worked as a group, sometimes becoming part of other groups temporarily. Somehow they continued to be pulled back together. A group that never gained the popularity that the members deserved, with multiple albums to their name (ironically, sometimes guest staring others that they’ve backed for.)

This iconic group (dubbed “The Section Band” in the 70s) is currently on tour (as of writing this). I can’t help but feel like it would be an unforgettable experience to hear the handcrafted sounds that have helped back so many. They set their own rules and have become iconic by doing so, and I dare you to check out this documentary to find out how many of their rifts you know!

My favorite part of reviewing documentaries is learning about topics I either didn’t know or knew little about. I still argue that I would’ve learned more in school if we had watched documentaries instead of reading outdated textbooks. This year, I’ve been introduced to Fanny, The Matches, learned more about David Bowie and dove into Woodstock ‘99 and The Secret Garden Party festival.
